Newly Revised Demo

This new version of the demo makes a lot of small changes that I hope add up to an overall much better experience. Small changes to enemy placement and level design have been made to make things easier, as well as some small tweaks to the mechanics. The settings menu is also now functional and an accessibility menu has been added as well to help players who might want an easier experience. Below is a more detailed, but not exhaustive, explanation of the changes made:

Mechanics Changes:

  • Somersault Changes: as before, Pixa will still somersault when landing a jump with enough speed. However she will now stop somersaulting immediately if you release the joystick/directional key.  Additionally,  you can also now somersault by double tapping left/right while on the ground. Also, a bug has been fixed that would stop you from somersaulting if you landed on sloped ground.
  • Jumping after Somersault: Pixa will now flash for a second after somersaulting, during which time you can jump higher, rather than only getting the higher jump if you jumped during her somersault animation. If you want a simpler experience that doesn't require as much timing, you can turn an option on in the accessibility menu to make your standard jump higher.
  • Wall Jumping: as before, Pixa will begin to slide down a wall if you push left/right while falling against it, during which time you can wall jump. Now, even if you release left/right while sliding, you will continue to slide down the wall until you reach the bottom of it.
  • Water Ability: the water ability has been made more robust. It shoots a little faster, farther, and the water droplets are bigger to give it more visual impact on the screen.
  • Aerial Kick: you can now turn around during an aerial kick. This was intended to work before but there was a coding error that made it not function.
  • Better Wand Attack: the collision box for the wand attack has been made bigger so that it will hit things overlapping you as well as things in front of you.
  • Coins: You will now heal 1hp for every 50 coins you collect, as indicated by a small x/50 counter displayed when you collect a coin. Losing coins from dying doesn’t reset this counter. Later in the game coins will be used in shops but that is not present in this demo.
  • Invincibility Frames: Pixa’s i-frames last 1.5 times as long after getting hit now.

Enemy Changes:

  • All of the owl and hedgehog enemies have been removed from this level. They have been mostly replaced with snails or gnomes. These enemies will return in a later level
  • Gnomes only take 1 hit to kill now. Their bombs only deal 1 damage instead of 2, and they drop bombs somewhat less frequently.
  • Spiders now flash purple before spitting acid to indicate they are going to attack.
  • Snails can now drop health.
  • The guard robots inside the color temple have 1 less heath and their attack has a slightly shorter range and explode faster so that they don't pose as much of an obstacle.

Menus and Options Changes:

  • All of the settings in the settings menu are now functional, including volume control, screen shake and controller rumble level, and joystick sensitivity settings.
  • An accessibility menu has been added that lets you adjust the game speed between 50-100%. You can also adjust your damage multiplier to up to 4x, and can toggle on higher jumps, double health drops, and invincibility.
  • When you select return to title, the game will ask whether you want to save or not.
  • The game over screen includes an option to save and quit now, rather than the non functional return to map option.

Level Changes:

  • 3 extra checkpoints have been added within the level.
  • Some minor adjustments have been made to the level layout and enemy placements.
  • The room after you get the double jump ability now has some spirits that demonstrate how to do the jumps you need to do to escape.
